The Ellsworth Police Department is proud to serve the citizens of Ellsworth and strives to provide the most professional law enforcement services possible. As County Seat, Ellsworth is the most populous city in the county. Ellsworth also serves with distinction as the financial, governmental and retail center of Hancock County.

As a result of the roles that Ellsworth plays in the county, the Police Department is challenged to serve the 6500-plus year round residents, summer residents and multitude of visitors. As gateway to the Acadia National Park-Bar Harbor region, thousands of cars pass through Ellsworth every day bringing with them a wide range of demands on police services.

The Police Department is also challenged by the fact that Ellsworth encompasses approximately 95 square miles, making it the largest city, area-wise, in the State of Maine. Within the city limits are three major lakes, a tidal river and several other bodies of water. The popularity of living on the water, in many cases year round, bring with it the difficulties of patrolling scores of camp roads.

Further exacerbating this problem is the fact that the urban area is located in the southeast corner of the city. The vast majority of our calls for service arise from this area, resulting in a lesser amount of patrol coverage for the rural areas. A call for service to the outlying areas can result in a trip of 15-20 minutes to reach the destination.
