The idea to re-construct a bridge at this location has been around for decades.
Can anyone identify the vintage on this concept plan?

Ellsworth staff, Mick Rogers from the MDOC Bureau of Parks and Lands and others concerned about recreational trails met August 20, 2009 to discuss a proposed multi-purpose bridge over the Union River. The location would be upstream from Leonard Lake connecting Infant Street and Shore Road. Multi-purpose paths are also planned to take advantage of this new route over the Union River.

The Recreational Trails Program may receive more funding this fall. It could provide up to $35,000 for a trail and up to $100,000 for a bridge with motorized recreational vehicle traffic. A match of 20% will be needed. In-kind funding is allowed as match.
Before submitting an application this November we will need to demonstrate that the bridge is served by actual public trails, not proposed ones. This will require getting written agreements from landowners and perhaps some construction. Permitting and a long-term maintenance plan will also be needed.
